Here it is, beautifully presented, the first coffee that inspired me to begin my coffee journey. Recommended by a friend, this was a bold and delicious inauguration into the world of coffee.
The Colombian farm is an award-winning third-generation family-run operation, nestled in the Valle de Cauca. Producing several speciality coffee varietals in a region where these coffees can have a hard time adapting to the soil, climate conditions and high altitude. Splicing tradition and innovation has led to the birth and success of four separate farms in Colombia, with nearly half a million coffee crops between them.
That said, it seems Crosby made an interesting choice in producing a dual-release, a first for them, by offering this particular coffee processed two different ways. The washed version is the one that I bought and have been enjoying the last few weeks, though they also offer a natural variety too, which promises to sport tarter, more fermented fruit-forward flavours. Thinking back, it would have been interesting to buy a box of both varieties to compare and contrast their flavour.
Onto flavour then: as a first foray into the world of home-ground, home-brewed coffee, I have to imagine this is a strong one. I mainly brewed this in a french press using a 60g/l ratio. The resultant drink was dark and rounded in flavour profile, with a pleasant caramel quality. Brewing was an absolute delight as its bold, full and unctuous aroma filled the kitchen. I have to say, the sweet pear notes advertised were lost to me, but for now I will chalk that down to an undeveloped coffee palate.
A strong, inspiring cup to launch me into the coffee world. Crosby, La Esperenza, you have my thanks.
